WHAT IS THE MAIN DIFFERENCE BETWEEN ALPHA HYDROXY ACIDS AND BETA HYDROXY ACIDS?
The main difference between alpha hydroxy acids and beta hydroxy acid is their lipid (oil) solubility. Alpha hydroxy acids (glycolic acid) are very water soluble only, whereas the beta hydroxy acid is lipid (oil) soluble. This means that beta hydroxy acid (salicylic acid) can penetrate into the pore which contains sebum and exfoliate the dead skin cells that are built up inside the pore. Because of this difference in physical properties, the beta hydroxy acid is better on oily skin with blackheads and whiteheads. Alpha hydroxy acids are better used on thickened, sun-damaged skin where breakouts are not a problem |

Product Details |
- alicylic acid loosens and removes aged cells, oil and debris attached to the skins surface reducing future breakouts
- Salicylic acid is oil-soluble and lipophilic so it penetrates follicles deep down that contain sebum, exfoliating, cleaning and removing the impurities responsible for clogged pores
- Salicylic will control acne breakouts, blackheads, and decrease the amount of redness associated with pimples
- Glycolic Acid reduces the appearance of scars much better then any creams or lotions available over the counter
- Both are great for wrinkles, scars, fine lines as well as improving damaged skin caused by the sun or other UV light damage

Best Peels for Acne Prone Skin
|
| Review Date: October 18, 2009 |
| Reviewer: AmandaC, |
Up until the last two months I have used a 20% Salicylic acid peel I bought here on Amazon to take care of blackheads and in the long term (hopefully) my old acne scarring. While after using the 20% peel for over a year, on a weekly basis, I can safely say that it was not very effective in reducing scarring. This is probably because I am not sensitive towards that grade of acid.
When I tried this peel combination, for the first time, I had a peel that felt hot and stung a little. I experienced reddening and a little tiny tiny amount of pain after rinsing well. That went away within minutes, and my skin felt tighter and smoother. Over the week my skin peeled a little bit, not much visibly. But oh gosh, there are such incredible results with this. After I used it the first time I was complimented on the texture of my skin, and after the third time using it nearly all of the reddish scarring I had from my acne years ago was fading quite visibly. After two months of using this weekly (I can handle it, I'm not sure if everyone can so use it according to your own needs), I have no scars left and my enlarged pores are much, much smaller. I'm VERY satisfied with this peel, and I'm definitely going to be purchasing it again when I run out.
Note: If you have blackhead problems, this is also a great peel for you! Now, I have so many blackheads on my nose, that until using this product regularly I didn't know that I had freckles. (And I know it's not sun damage because my father's family and my sister have freckles) Seriously, my blackheads were THAT bad. Well, I like my freckles that I can now see, and they look really nice on my now smooth skin :)
PS if you have trouble getting blackheads out still, a nice way of clearing them out is using a coarse wash cloth (preferably white) wrapped over your finger and scraping affected areas as if you were scratching an itch RIGHT AFTER YOU RINSE THE PEEL. It's weird, but for some reason they come right out. (At least on me, if you're desperate, it's worth a shot.) |
It works

| I haven't had a break out since using the peels. My skin is more even, too. I use a cotton pad over the affected areas. Sometimes I spot treat with a brush. It stings sometimes, so don't leave it on long. |
Better Than I Hoped

It's been 2 weeks since I did these peels and I thought I owed the company a good review. I did a lot of research prior to purchasing this, because I was afraid to do a peel on my own, yet I couldn't afford to have it done professionally, and my skin was so bad I was getting desperate. I am so glad that I did it!
The peel itself was uncomfortable, but not painful. I was red afterwards, which I expected, but the recovery was the miserable part. By the third day I looked so hideous I wanted to hide in the closet! My skin was peeling, flaking and scabbed...it was hideous! I hadn't taken time off work to do it, because I didn't have leave that I could spare, so I just did my best to "lay low" until I looked a little more presentable. By the 4th day, I was looking much better, and within a week most of the peeling and scabbing was gone.
But all the discomfort was worth it! After one treatment the dark splotches all over my face are reduced by more than half I would say. My skin is the smoothest I can remember it being since my 20's. My pores are smaller and my complexion is beautiful. I've never had pretty skin, but now I really do. It has a glow and brightness that it never had before. It has also tightened my skin dramatically.
A word of advice - The worst days in the healing process for me were Day 2 and Day 3. If you did the peel on a Thursday night, the worst days would be over the weekend, saving you the embarassment of being in public. |
